About Favicons (also known as page icons)

Introduction

This page is about those little shortcut icons that you often see next to an URL in the address bar. When people bookmark your website the favicon or shortcut icon appears next to the link. These icons are saved in .ico format, are usually 16x16 pixels and can be created in Microsoft Paint. You can also create favicons in various online editors on the web. Alternatively, you can download free favicons or pay someone to create a custom favicon for you.

How to Add a Favicon to Your Website

  • First you either need to create your own icon (save as favicon.ico or a different name of your choice) or download one.

  • Save it in the root folder of your website.

  • Assuming that you have named your icon favicon.ico, add the following code in the head section of your page (replacing the words YOUR TITLE with your own chosen title;
  • <link rel="shortcut icon " href="favicon.ico">
    <title>YOUR TITLE </title>

  • If you have named your icon something else, replace "favicon.ico" with the name of your icon file.
